Independent Technical Assessments of Software Systems

The engagement is the narrowest of the firm’s advisory practices: focused on a specific project, vendor, or delivered system, not on the engineering practice as a whole.

What an Independent Technical Assessment Covers

The shape of an assessment varies with the timing of the question. Cyberonix is most often retained while a project is in flight, before a vendor commitment, or after a delivery has been accepted. The three corresponding assessment shapes below are common patterns rather than a fixed menu, and a single engagement may combine two of them.

Projects in progress. Whether a software project is on track to deliver, on what timeline, and at what residual risk. The assessment compares reported status to what the artifacts support: codebase, version control history, project records, defect data, and the gap between what the project plan describes and what the working software actually demonstrates. Where the project’s stated path to completion does not match what the artifacts show, the assessment names the gap.

Vendor technical claims. Pre-engagement evaluation of a vendor’s pitch, proposal, or technical approach. The assessment treats the vendor’s claims as testable: where the vendor cites a capability, the assessment looks for what the vendor’s prior work, design documents, or available implementations actually support. The output is a calibrated read on whether the claim is defensible, where the gaps are, and what the buyer should require before committing.

Delivered systems. Post-delivery evaluation of whether a system meets the specification, contract, or stated requirements that justified acceptance. The assessment maps the delivered system against the requirements it was meant to satisfy and reports where the system supports the specification, where it falls short, and where the requirement itself was ambiguous enough that “meets specification” was indeterminable from the documentation alone.

How We Conduct the Assessment

An engagement begins with a scoping conversation that defines the question and identifies the artifacts to be examined. Cyberonix then conducts a targeted review of those artifacts, supplemented by interviews with engineers, technical leads, and project sponsors where doing so would sharpen the analysis. The review is scoped to the question rather than to the practice as a whole; an isolated symptom is treated as a candidate finding for further investigation, not as the conclusion. Findings are reported in terms of what the artifacts support.

The work is grounded in the artifacts of the engagement: the codebase, version control history, design documents, project records, defect data, and contractual specifications where they exist. The chain of evidence behind each finding is preserved so the client can re-examine any specific point. This evidentiary discipline is the same standard the firm applies to its litigation work, calibrated to the audience: written analysis for leadership rather than expert reports for counsel and the court.

The Written Assessment

The deliverable is a written assessment that states the question, the artifacts examined, the analysis, and the conclusion. Where the evidence supports a clear answer, the answer is stated directly. Where the evidence is mixed or partial, the assessment names what it supports and what it does not, rather than collapsing the uncertainty into a single recommendation a leadership audience cannot interrogate. Findings are tied to specific artifacts so the client can re-examine any individual point and so the assessment as a whole is reproducible from the record.

An assessment scoped to a specific project sometimes surfaces evidence of something larger: a systemic engineering practice problem, an architectural issue that extends beyond the project at hand, or AI-driven development that has outpaced the practice maintaining the codebase. Where that happens, the assessment names the broader finding and points to the appropriate next engagement, whether that is a software engineering practice overhaul, a software architecture and system design engagement, or an AI-integrated software engineering engagement.
