Careers at Cyberonix

Cyberonix is a software expert witness consulting firm whose work covers three related areas: software expert witness consulting on litigation matters; pre-litigation engagements in intellectual-property monetization; and advisory consulting with technology and corporate leadership on executive technology decisions and AI and technology due diligence. This combination is a career path most computer-science candidates have not considered, and it draws on a less-common combination of skills than either software engineering or legal practice alone: careful technical analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and writing for non-technical decision-makers. Cyberonix is building a team of salaried consultants to do this work alongside the firm’s senior expert witnesses. The Work

Work at Cyberonix is organized around engagements, not products. Each engagement begins with a question, from counsel in a litigation matter or from leadership at a company in an advisory matter, that requires a careful technical answer grounded in evidence. The job is to produce that answer, in writing, at a level that holds up under non-technical scrutiny.

Day to day, the work involves reading source code, analyzing system architectures, reviewing development records, evaluating technology choices, and producing written analysis. Engagement types vary widely.

A patent matter might require structural comparison of an accused product against the elements of an asserted claim. A trade-secret matter might require side-by-side code-comparison analysis to determine whether segments of an accused codebase trace to a complainant’s proprietary source. A due-diligence engagement might require evaluation of a target company’s engineering practices and the state of its codebase ahead of an acquisition. An executive advisory engagement might require an independent assessment of a struggling project, identifying what is working, what is not, and what to do about it.

The deliverables are technical writing pitched at a level an intelligent non-technical reader can follow: expert reports, declarations, and rebuttal reports in litigation matters; assessments and recommendations in advisory matters. That reader might be an attorney, a judge, a CEO, or a board of directors. Engagement length ranges from a few days through many months. Senior consultants give expert testimony at depositions and trials and present findings to clients; salaried consultants support that work today and progressively take on more direct responsibility as their experience grows.

Who We’re Looking For

Cyberonix hires for technical depth and analytical care, not for a specific credential. The work draws on software engineering judgment, the discipline to ground conclusions in the evidence rather than in intuition, and the writing ability to make a technical argument that an intelligent non-technical reader can follow and an opposing expert cannot dismiss.

A range of backgrounds can do this work well, and neither a doctorate nor a legal background is required. Profiles that tend to fit include a recent master’s graduate in computer science with one or two years of engineering experience; an undergraduate computer-science degree-holder with several years of professional software work; a doctorate in computer science or a closely related field; or a senior practitioner considering a transition out of full-time engineering. Cyberonix hires for fit between the candidate and the work, and attorneys retain the firm for technical judgment rather than for legal analysis. The qualities that matter across all of these profiles are comfort reading and reasoning about unfamiliar codebases, careful technical writing, and the willingness to learn the procedural context in which the work is used.
